Obituary
Please share a memory of Philip to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Phil MacInnes, St. George’s Channel, Richmond Co., announces his passing at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston on Monday, November 4, 2013. He was in his 93rd year. Born at Backlands, St. George’s Channel, he was the only child of the late John and Tena (Urquhart) MacInnes. He is survived by daughters, Phyllis (Ross Wagg), St. George’s Channel and Georgie (John McNeil), Canaan, King’s County; grandchildren, Amy Wagg, Dartmouth; Ian Wagg, Halifax; Danielle McNeil Taylor (Mike), Ottawa and Stephen McNeil (Sarah Morse), Waterloo. He was predeceased by his wife Christena (Frost). Phil began his career as a farmer and was noted for his championship plowing. He gave up full time farming in 1967 and went to work for Atlantic Concrete in Port Hawkesbury. When the construction boom ended he went to work for Nova Scotia Power, from which he retired. An active community volunteer, he served in local farm groups, was a former church steward and elder in the church, and the last president of the local mutual telephone company. He was a charter member of the Dundee Golf Club and a member of the Evergreen Club in Port Hawkesbury. A proud Scotsman, Phil was a lover of Cape Breton Scottish fiddle music. He "called" the dances in his youth and would play the fiddle for the lucky few who were able to coax him into sharing a tune or two. Friendly and outgoing he will be missed by his family and friends. Visitation with family will be in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., with the funeral service being held in Black River United Church at 2 p.m., Thursday with Rev Richard Bowley officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Mountain Arm of Gold Community Association, the Black River Cemetery, or any charity of your choice.
