Obituary
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sadness that the family of Donald Hector MacInnis announces his passing at the Dartmouth General Hospital on Saturday, December 14th, 2013. Hector was as courageous and brave in death as he was in life. Born in Port Hawkesbury, to the late Allan and Sarah (MacDonald) MacInnis, he was the youngest of his family.
Hector volunteered into the ranks of the First Special Service Force also known as the ‘Devils Brigade’ where he served the army proudly. The men of the First Special Service Force were among the first Allied troops to enter Rome and are credited with the liberation of this city. He was awarded numerous military honours as well as his latest recognition, which is yet to come when the American Congress awards the Congressional Medal of Honour to the Canadian members of the First Special Service Force. Hector was a retired Lockmaster with the Canadian Coast Guard at the Canso Canal, Port Hastings. He had a lifelong commitment to political service, and social justice. He served the Town of Port Hawkesbury for more than 30 years as a councilor and as Deputy Mayor. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 43) and the Knights of Columbus. He was devoted to his Tim Horton coffee buddies both in Port Hawkesbury and, more recently, in Dartmouth where he met every morning no matter what the weather. We will miss Dad’s bravery, his dry wit, his keen sense of humour and most of all his love of family and his unending support to those closest to him.
We must let him go and wish him well.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (McNamara); daughters, Cheryl (Ken) Brothers; Stephanie (Harry) Langley; Michele (David) Fox; grandchildren, Paul (Zandra) White, Darryl (Jacqueline) White, Barry White, Nicolle Langley, Jason (Krista) Langley, Adam Fox and Christopher Fox as well as great grandchildren, Caoimhe, Carter, Max, Cali and Jorja, nephew, Brian MacNeil (Murielle) and many other nieces and nephews. He had many friends who were dear to his heart including, John and Arthur Langley, Dougie Beaton and the late Garth Haverstock. Hector was predeceased by sister, Catherine (Pat) Scapalatti; brothers, Dan Joe (Florence), Duncan (Shirley), Alex (Rita) and John Malcolm (Lois); son-in-law, K. Paul White.
