MacNeil, Mary Agnes, - Port Hastings, Inverness Co. It is with broken hearts and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of our beloved Mary with her family by her side on Friday, March 18, 2016 in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.To the end she cherished her family and friends and was concerned about their well-being. Mary welcomed everyone to her home with open arms and treated them with kindness, food and many hearty laughs. She loved the simple things in life and was tuned in to the wonders of nature. She gave willingly of her time and talents for the betterment of her community. Mary was born in Antigonish to parents Theresa (Beaton) MacDonell and the late Alex William MacDonell and lived her early years in Judique. Mary is survived by her husband and soul mate, Neil; her daughter, Emily; sisters, Sally Rankin, Margaret (Tim) Soley, Janet (Harvey) van Zutphen, Jean (Tim) Hierlihy; brothers, Billy (Bernadette) MacDonell and Angus (Joanie) MacDonell. Mary is also survived by numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Mary was predeceased by her mother and father–in-law, Gladys and Sandy MacNeil, brothers-in-law, Ronnie MacNeil and John Morris Rankin. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Care Unit, Sydney; Sisters of the Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney and the Strait Richmond Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Evanston especially Dr. Robert Martel for the care and compassion shown to Mary and her family in their time of need. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 22, from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Judique with Father Duncan MacIsaac officiating, assisted by Father Allan MacMillan. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Mary may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society, Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Sydney or Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney.
