NICHOLAS, Joseph Andrew- Age 60, We’koqma’q First Nation, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. He was born in a small community in Pictou Landing, raised by his adopted mother, the late Mary Catherine (Basque) Prosper (of We’koqma’q) his parents, late Ella Mae (Francis) and Joseph Patrick Nicholas (Pictou Landing).
He married and started his family at a young age of 18, in the beautiful community of We’koqma’q, where he proudly called home for 42 years. Joseph was known for his caring and loving ways, he always made sure his family was well taken care of, even to the very last day of his passing. He volunteered with community events on a regular basis, before his fight with cancer. Cancer did not stop Joe from completing his bucket list, he lived his last days by accomplishing every goal he set for himself. He passed away with peace, love and honour. Joseph was an inductee of The Sports Hall of Fame, in New Glasgow for his talent of canoe racing. A Residential School survivor, a trapper and a step-father to many, Papa Joe they would call him. He will always be remembered by his sense of humour and his unique laugh. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.
Joseph is survived by nine of his children, including the children he raised as his own, his sons, Raymond (Eunice) Bernard, Wagmatcook; Noel (Mel) Nicholas, Pictou Landing; Joseph (Holly) Nicholas, Enos Nicholas and Tevin Nicholas, all from We’koqma’q; daughters, Eva (Troy) Nicholas, Ella Nicholas, both from We’koqma’q; Bernice (Joey) Nicholas and Laura Nicholas, both from Pictou Landing; sisters, Sarah (the late Steven) Francis, Jennie (the late Clifford) Stevens, Mary (Alan) Hatifield, Josephine Gould, all from Pictou Landing; Ann Nicholas, Millbrook; brothers, Durney Nicholas, Noel Nicholas all of Pictou Landing; 20 grandchildren; 4 godchildren, Kim Hatifield, Hubert Nicholas, Verna Boyles Langley and Harvey Jij Bernard. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony, Norman and James Nicholas and one in infancy; sisters, Margaret Rose Francis, Catherine Marie Nicholas, Clara Marie Boyles and Susie Ann Nicholas.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Saturday in the Multi Purpose Building, 160 Reservation Rd, We’koqma’q First Nation. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday from Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, We’koqma’q First Nation with Father Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
