Please share a memory of Gordon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
JOHNSTON, Gordon William, age 70, Port Hawkesbury, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late William & Margaret (Fleming) Johnston.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Freda (Richardson) and two beautiful daughters, Juanita (Dave) and Tracy (Lucien) of Port Hawkesbury, as well as three handsome grandsons, Jordan Bissonnette, Jacques Gerroir and Andre Gerroir who were his pride and joy. Also surviving are his sisters, Heather (Donnie) Broome, Joyce Johnston and Nancy (Kevin) Stewart. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Kenny and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Born in Edmonton, he was raised as an "Air Force Brat" and lived in many parts of Canada. He did a short stint in the Royal Canadian Navy aboard HMCS Provider and then aboard the CGS Chebucto with the Department of Fisheries.
In 1972 he began a 30 year career with Nova Scotia Power at the Point Tupper Generating Station finishing his career as the Senior Operations Supervisor. After a brief retirement he decided to go back to the payroll as Chief Power Engineer at St F X University.
Besides being a dedicated son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle he was a dedicated volunteer in the Strait Area. Gordon served as a tireless and dedicated volunteer for over 30 years with the Port Hawkesbury Lions Club. Provincially he served as the District Governor for Nova Scotia in 1990-1991 and nationally as Chairman of the Board for the Lions Foundation of Canada where they honored him as a lifetime member of their foundation. In his own community of Judique, he served on the board of the Judique and Area Development Association and the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre. His love of sports lead him all over the province to enjoy watching his grandsons play. Gordon loved the game of golf with his "buddies" but more recently his love for genealogy and photography occupied his days.
Many thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at St. Martha's Regional Hospital, PCU and the nurses in the Chemo Department at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Special thanks to his go to doctors, Dr. Maude MacInnis and Dr. Kate MacInnis.
