SMITH, Arthur Alexander "Alex" – Age 82, South Lake Ainslie passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, in the Inverary Manor, Inverness. Born in Inverness he was a son of the late John and Mary (Copan) Smith. Alex was a loving and devoted family man; he dearly loved his precious wife of 59 years, Ruthie, his daughter Karen and his beloved granddaughters, Hannah and Molly. As a young boy he moved with his family to New Waterford. When he met the love of his life, he started a family in Sydney. Afterwards he returned to Inverness County, settling in Lake Ainslie. Alex enjoyed the quiet life of Lake Ainslie, taking care of his lawn, vehicles and property. He enjoyed having visits from his brothers and sister and the door was always open for friends. Alex worked as a meat cutter and then a salesman for many years where he met many people and made lifetime friends. Surviving are his daughter, Karen Smith, Antigonish; granddaughters, Hannah (Andrew Boyle) and Molly; brothers, Henry (Melita), New Waterford; Ronnie, New Waterford; Glen (Evelyn), Glace Bay; George (Cathy), New Waterford; sister, Sadie (Dave) MacLean, Glace Bay; sisters and brother-in-law, Louise Glasgow, Anna Smith, Sandra MacIntyre, Charlene MacLeod, Irene Clarke, Finley Samson; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Ruthie (MacIntyre); brothers, Douglas and Jackie Smith as well as two brothers in infancy; sister and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Samson, Donnie, William and Allister MacIntyre, Ray Glasgow. The family would like to thank the nurse’s and staff of the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital and the Inverary Manor for the care they gave to Alex during his time there, especially the staff of the manor during the last week. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday from Alexander Grant Memorial United Church, East Lake Ainslie with Rev. Rachel Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in East Lake Ainslie Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care, East Lake Ainslie Cemetery or a charity of one’s choice.
