HILLIER, Rodney Troy Douglas – With sad hearts and wonderful memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Rodney Troy Douglas Hillier, age 49 of Port Hawkesbury, surrounded by his loving wife and high school sweetheart, Judi (Butt) and devoted sons, Troy and Benjamin, after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, January 17, 2016, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. In addition to his wife and sons, left to mourn are his parents, Rae and Daphne Hillier; sister, Cyndi Hillier (Trevor); brother, Ian Hillier (Dana); mother-in-law, Pauline Butt; sisters-in-law, Donna Butt, Marilyn (Gerry) Ryall; brother-in-law, Bill (Jackie) Butt; nieces and nephews, Gerry, Andrew and Christopher Ryall; Hilary and Tyler Butt; Jennifer Hillier; Haylee Arnold. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, William Butt. Rod was born on September 19, 1966, in St. John’s, NL. He graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1990. Upon graduating, he moved to Nova Scotia with Judi to begin his career with Stora Forest Industries where he worked for 21 years before moving to Nova Scotia Power. Rod was the epitome of an engineer, displaying a keen intelligence, strong work ethic and exceptional interpersonal skills. He loved his job and continued to work throughout his illness, regardless of how he was feeling. Rod’s main focus in his life was Judi, Troy and Ben. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. Some of the things that gave him the most enjoyment in life were sharing his many skills with his boys, watching them play hockey and cruising on the Harley with Judi. He has left them with a legacy of wonderful memories. We would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses involved in Rod’s care during the past five years. Special thanks are given to Dr’s MacCormick and Cooper; Nancy Cameron, Jeannie and the other nurses at the Cancer Clinic, Antigonish, Caroline Hennessey, Dr. Paul Pluta and all the staff at Strait Richmond Hospital. The care given to Rod and his family at Strait Richmond Hospital during the past two weeks was exceptional and we are very grateful.
