Please share a memory of Dorian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
HARNISH, Dorian Edward- Age 66, Fox Island, Guysborough Co. It is with profound sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, son, brother, father and grandfather, on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, in the Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso surrounded by his loving family.
Dorian was born on August 23, 1949, in Canso, he was a son of Louise (Myatt) Harnish of Little Dover and the late Isaac Harnish.
Dorian was a very talented man who was known to tackle just about any project, if there was no solution he created the solution. No task was too big or small for his capable hands and his imagination. He was a well known business man, establishing D.E Harnish Contracting, building houses and other establishments and moving houses.
In 1983 Dorian saw the need for accommodations in the area and with no previous experience he built, owned and operated The Dorian Motel in Hazel Hill, along with his wife Pat, later to become known as The Last Port Motel.
After his first cancer illness in 1998, Dorian decided to retire from contracting and follow his dream of operating a building supply store, County Building Supplies, located in West Cooks Cove, Guysborough Co., later to become part of the Central Home Improvement chain of stores when Dorian and Pat retired in 2002.
After retirement, many happy days were spent boating the beautiful waters of Little Dover and area, first in the houseboat he designed and built, then in his cruiser. The last summer of Dorian’s life was spent RVing, trading boating for this new experience.
He was a wonderful, caring man who will be forever missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Patricia (Hanlon); his children, son, Mark (Lois); daughter, Jolene; grandsons, Jacob and Mitchell; mother, Louise; sister, Wanda (Don) Bouchie; brothers, Calvin (Sheila), Herb (Loraine), Nelson (Bernadette); sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barry and Mary Richards. He was predeceased by his father, Isaac.
Dorian was immensely proud of this children, who both inherited his business savvy and he was so looking forward to the future, to see what his wonderful two grandsons were going to become in life. Dorian was a loyal and trusted friend who was always there to lend a helping hand, his friends were his old friends but he was always making new ones.
Over this past year of dealing with his illness, it was amazing to him how many lives he touched by the constant outpouring of love and support. Among the many special people in his life, he was particularly fond of Jolene’s lifelong "sis", Tamitha Oakley and Shawn and Kelly Rhynold. His dear old friends, you know who you are, he loved you all dearly.
