LONG, Johanna Elizabeth 'Josie' - 86, passed away peacefully in Guysborough Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 19, 2006, after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of the late Michael T. Long (Guysborough).
Born in Queensport (a place she was always proud to call home) she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Cora (Lukeman) Fitzgerald. Josie will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her sense of humor and spontaneous wit. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who never complained throughout her illness. She received the best of personal care from "her girls" Theresa, Bessie, Janie, Rowena, Beatrice, Shelly and Rita. Their kindness was well beyond the call of duty, which was greatly appreciated. She was employed by B & G Jost Limited with whom she worked for many years, retiring as manager of their clothing store where she enjoyed greeting and working with the citizens of Guysborough. She was a member of St. Ann's Parish, Guysborough and a former member of Chedabucto Curling Club. She enjoyed a good game of cards, telling stories and watching curling.
She is survived by her daughter, Beryl (Ralph) Hadley, Mulgrave; sons, Richard, Paul (Maureen), all of Guysborough; Gerard (Patricia), Lantz; David, Dartmouth; granddaughters, Kendra, Honey, Ashley, Cora and Hannah; grandsons, Kenneth, Matthew, Aaron; stepgrandson, Jason and great-granddaughter, Taylor; sister, Monica Mayer, Caperol, Ont.; brother, Richard Fitzgerald, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, whom she greatly missed; daughter-in-law Carol; brothers, Ambrose, Clarence, Kenneth, Duncan, Jerome and Herman and a sister, Mary in infancy.
Visitation will be held 2-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough, with funeral mass Wednesday, March 22, in St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church at 2 p.m., Rev. Jonathan Nweke officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Guysborough Memorial Hospital or St. Ann's Parish Building Fund.
