Meagher, Harold Maurice – 90, Pirate Harbour (Mulgrave), Guysborough Co., passed away in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish on Friday, April 30, 2010 after a brief illness. The son of Maurice and Clara (nee Marr) Meagher was pre-deceased by his four brothers – Jim, Ed, Bern, and Tom. He is survived by his sister, Theresa MacDonell, and two sisters-in-law – Marge and Annie Meagher, as well as twenty-seven nieces and nephews. Harold was a life-time resident of Pirate Harbour and served Mulgrave and area from 1936- 1967 as a general merchant. He enjoyed his weekly trips along the shore delivering groceries to families as far south as Sand Point and Hadleyville. In the later years of his career he specialized in sporting goods, particularly outboard motors, boats and snowmobiles. He was instrumental in introducing the sport of snowmobiling to the Mulgrave area in the early ‘60s, and by the late-70s his camp on Goose Harbour Lake was a principal meeting-place for snowmobilers from throughout the area. Everyone was welcome and many nights of good cheer were had with Harold at his beloved Lakeside Inn. Harold greatly enjoyed the open road. In his retirement he made several trips to the Yukon and Alaska and travelled extensively throughout Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. At seventy-nine he flew for the first time on a trip to the west of Ireland and to County Tipperary, the ancestral homeland of the Meaghers. When Harold became less active in his 80s, he was able to continue to live in his own home through the devoted support of his long-time friend, Dennis Kelly, and his nephew and close neighbour, Jerome Meagher and family. He also received excellent care from Dr. John Chiasson, his family doctor, the Home Care Workers of Guysborough County as well as the staff of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. The care and attentiveness these professionals showed to Harold is greatly appreciated by his family. Visitation will take place on Monday, May 3, from 2- 4 pm and 7- 9 pm in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held on Tues., May 4, at 11 am in St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave, Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Lawrence’s Parish, Mulgrave or the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com "It’s all good," Harold liked to say, summing up a life lived close to nature. We will all miss his quiet warmth and hospitality and his many stories from a life well lived. Service Information Service Date Tuesday, May 4, 2010
