LONG, Richard Michael – 59, Guysborough, passed away peacefully at Shannex Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax on January 22, 2012. Richard was the son of Michael and Josie (Fitzgerald) Long of Guysborough, Nova Scotia. He was a person of strong will and determination, having lived out the last 34 years after an accident left him physically impaired. Richard lived at home under the love and care of his parents until he moved to the Guysborough Seniors Ferry Lane apartments, living on his own for ten years. He moved to nursing care in the summer of 2010, first at Shannex Celtic Court in Sydney and for the last 16 months at the Parkstone Enchanced Care in Halifax. Richard loved to play cards, bingo and enjoyed watching the Blue Jays and curling. He was a truck driver and construction worker prior to his accident in 1978. Richard was a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 81 and Guysborough Lion’s Club. Richard loved his involvement in the Lions Club, his participation for several years fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation being his pride role in spite of his physical disabilities. Richard was the top fundraiser for Nova Scotia in 1992 raising $3,200. He was rewarded for his efforts by recognition from the Terry Fox Foundation and by personally meeting, Terry’s Mother, Betty Fox. Richard is survived by his daughter, Kendra (Scott) Casey, Sackville; Kenneth (Sandy), Grande Prairie, Alberta; sister, Beryl (Ralph) Hadley, Mulgrave; brothers, Gerard (Patricia), Lantz; David (Darleen); and Paul (Maureen), Guysborough; five grandchildren, Ella, Liam and Keira Casey; Carolee and Eva Long; and several nieces and nephews.
