With deep sadness we announce the death of Mary Gwendolyn "Adair"(Kennedy) Meagher, our dear mother, sister and friend on Wednesday February 12th, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sherbrooke, NS. She was born in Mulgrave to Captain Aloysius Kennedy and Rita (Bridget Loretta Keating). Left to mourn her loss are her children, Heather (Gary) Jewers, Antigonish, Erin (Kuz) Hayashi, New Germany, Shane (Cindy) Meagher, Airdrie, AB. Colleen (Danny) Toews, Neilburg, SK, Tim Meagher (Marn Norwich), Surrey, BC, Shannon (Rob) Wiebe, Neilburg, SK, Robyn Meagher (Jason Dorland), St. Catherine’s, ON, Kelly Meagher, Halifax, Brendan (Peggy) Meagher, Middle Sackville, NS. Seventeen grandchildren, Nanci, Wendi, Kevin, Patrick, Sherin, Sarah, Katie, Caleb, Ben, Connor, Cory, Lauren, Cassidy, Mataya, Sydney, Jack and Ethan, 13 great-grandchildren, brother Bud (Vivian) Kennedy, sisters, Yvonne (Paddy)Ryan, and Rosalie VanShepen, brothers-in-law Kevin Meagher and Kilmer (Janet) Meagher and sister-in-law Moira Keeping, as well as many nieces, nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gary, sisters Mary (in infancy) and Dawna Crittenden, brothers Germain and Paul Kennedy. Our mother often shared stories from a much enjoyed childhood growing up in Mulgrave, which revealed a girl who was wonderfully good natured, had a sense of justice, and an irrepressible streak of mischief. Growing up, Adair’s brothers had a close chum who was often on the scene, Gary, who would later become her husband and share a lifelong devoted and loving relationship. We children can bear witness to their mutual tenderness and deep affection. Our mother worked at the Eastern Counties Regional Library for 28 years where, often, the first thing you saw when you walked through the door was Adair peering over the top of her half glasses waiting to welcome and assist patrons. This was a perfect venue for a woman who held such a great enthusiasm for children’s reading. Our mother was a nurturer. She was gracious, beautiful, playful and fun. She was apt to show up at the outdoor rink for an evening skate with all the kids, or show up riding your own bicycle to tell you it was time to come home. She demonstrated how the backyard was perfectly good for coasting or would come out to play ball, even if it was just one of us. She was forever a giving and loving mother. With the devastating loss of our father, and with advancing Alzheimer’s, Adair entered High-Crest nursing home in Sherbrooke. The caregivers of High-Crest allowed her dignity and self-expression during this difficult change. She eventually found a sense of purpose and her own way of being nurturing and helpful there. Our family took great solace from the care they provided. The warmth and gentleness shown to our mother, and the other residents, are a testament to human goodness and the power of caring. Thank you. Also, thank you to the wonderful staff of St. Mary’s Hospital during her brief stay there and to Dr. Ackermann who provided her medical care both at High-Crest and St. Mary’s Hospital. Memorial donations in Adair’s memory may be made to High-Crest Home Sherbrooke, NS, or to the Mulgrave Branch of the Eastern Counties Regional Library, Mulgrave N.S. We thank you.
