WRIGHT, Michael Joseph Franklin "Frank" - 97, Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. Born on February 18, 1924 and raised in Point Tupper, Richmond Co., he was a son of the late James "Jim" Franklin Wright and Katherine "Katie" Mary MacDonald. He is survived by his sons, James Alexander "Sandy" Wright (Viviane Landry), Dundee, Richmond Co.; Edwin Stephen Wright, Halifax and Port Hawkesbury; daughters, Jean Louise Wright-Popescul (Gerald Fuss), Halifax; Mary Catherine Ahern (Garry), Fort McMurray, Alta.; grandchildren, Tony Wright (Denise MacDonald), Geoff Wright (Jill Murphy) and Sarah Wright (Jonas Murphy); Jennifer Ahern (Dan Anctil), Elizabeth Ahern (Malcolm Phillips), Jonathan Ahern (Ashleigh Gauthier) and Stephen Ahern; and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Louise MacNeil; their infant daughter, Sharon Anne; brother, John "Johnnie"; infant brother, Edwin; and infant grandson, Stephen Robert (Sandy and Viviane). A veteran of World War II, Frank joined the Canadian Army in 1944, served overseas in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, being discharged to civilian life in 1946. He returned to Camp Borden, Ontario for a brief period in the 1950’s, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. For many years he was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. Frank was employed by Canadian National Railways for thirty-six years. Following his retirement, he pursued a career in fine art, specializing in the portraiture of nineteenth and early twentieth-century British and North American ships, becoming pre-eminent in his field. In his later years, Frank focused on painting the natural beauty of his native Cape Breton Island. Visitation for family and invited guests will be held on Tuesday, February 15th in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass (limited to family and invited guests) will be on Wednesday, February 16th in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph's Parish Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury at a later date. Donations in memory of Frank may be made to Strait Richmond Health Care Foundation or St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery Fund.
