GILLIS, KENNETH ROBERT, of Judique passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Richmond Villa, St. Peter's. He was born in Harbour View to the late Margaret (MacDonald) Graham and Archibald Gillis on Aug 12, 1932. As a young man Kenny worked with his family to pick up and deliver mail by horse and wagon, sometimes on foot. He worked on the construction of the Canso Causeway, gold mines in Northern Ontario, and retired from Stora. He was an advocate for safety on the work site, worked in mine rescue, and was fire chief for the Judique & Area Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He played a strong role in bringing an ambulance service to the area through the JVFD. He spent time with youth, coaching Little League baseball and minor hockey. He was a great Gaelic singer and step-dancer and enjoyed lobster fishing in St. George's Bay. He was a member of the Kildonan Senior's Club, spent time horse-racing, card playing, Bingo and organizing many community events. He is survived by partner, Ellen Macdonald; children, Virginia (A.J.) MacIsaac, Burton (Sylvia) Gillis, Ken (Tanya) Gillis, Brenda (Archie) MacDonald, Clayton (Karen) Gillis, and the mother of his children Louise (MacDonald) Gillis. He is also survived by grandchildren, Kent (Andrea) MacIsaac, Chris MacIsaac, Amy MacDonald, Nolan MacDonald, and Alex Budiasih; by special cousin Veronica (Gillis) MacEachern, God-daughter Annette MacIsaac, many nieces and nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents and infant daughter, Loretta, brothers, Donald (Peggy) Gillis, Martin (Eileen) Gillis, Stanley (Loretta) Gillis, sister, Kay (John Donald) MacDonald; half-brother, Alex Graham; half-sisters, Elizabeth Gillis (Mario) DiFazio and Annie Laura Graham (Tony) Zenns. Visitation is at the Community Room in the Judique Fire Station beginning Monday, May 6, from 7-9 PM, Tuesday, May 7, 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Service is on Wednesday, May 8, at 11:00 AM in St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Judique with Rev. Allan MacMillan officiating. Interment in St. Andrew's Parish Cemetery, Judique. Donations can be made to the Recreation Department of the Richmond Villa, St. Peter's or the Judique Volunteer Fire Department.
