Gillis, Marion Shirley, 70 - Port Hawkesbury and formerly of Glendale, passed away peacefully in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, August 4, 2013 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born January 5, 1943 to the late Noddie and Louise (Warner) MacIntyre of Point Tupper. Mom worked for 15 years at the Royal Bank in Toronto, later moving to Glendale where she spent many years as a stay at home mom. She worked at Children’s Aid Society in Port Hawkesbury and volunteered for the Literacy Council; Glendale Men’s Club; the Exercise Group, "The Happy Losers"; Diabetes and the Cancer Society; The Inverness County Recreation for over 15 years. Mom is survived by her children, Gordon Glen (Bev) and their children Josh and Kayla, Port Hawkesbury; Marylee (Todd MacNeil) and their children Hallie, Nolan and Cole, Troy; Tammy (Mike Murray) and their daughter Hope, Troy; Tracy (Stan MacNeil) and their children Keanan and Brady, Port Hawkesbury; Kimberlee (John MacLeod) and their children Brooklynn and Morgan, Fort McMurray; brothers, Peter (Anna) MacIntyre, Grantville; Roger (Maureen) MacIntyre, Glendale; sister, Mary Lou (late Stu) Thow, Trenton, Ont. ; sisters -in-law, Rose MacIntyre, Evanston; and Gerry MacIntyre, Alberta; brother-in-law, Glen (Janet) Gillis, Whycocomagh; sister-in-law, Shirley (Bill) Conklin, Whycocomagh; brothers-in-law, Keith Gillis and the late Brian Gillis both of Ontario. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Gordie; daughter, Wendy Lou; sisters, Patsy (Roy) Swain and Helen McNamara; brothers, Hughie John and "Red" Jim MacIntyre. Mom always had a smile on when her grandchildren came to visit and they will remember her fondly especially for her Pringles and ice cream treats. Many thanks to Dr. Ron McCormick who followed mom through her 8 year journey with cancer, Dr’s. Pluta and Collins; staff at Strait Richmond Hospital and St. Martha’s Hospital Chemo Unit; Michael Hatt and Staff at the Medicine Shoppe; Continuing Care Nurses and Home Support workers; most recently her private caregivers, all of her friends at Sunset Manor who always kept a close eye on her and were very good to Mom, and to friends, family and everyone involved in the care given to Mom allowing her to stay in her home up until the day of her death. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 9, from 2-8 p.m.; and from where the funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 11 a.m. both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with Rev. Donna Tourner officiating. Burial to take place in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury. Memorial donations in memory of Marion may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Clinic, c/o Tom MacNeil; Cathy’s Place Cancer Care, Antigonish; or to the Canadian Red Cross, Port Hawkesbury Branch.
