Gillis, Donald MacVarish, Age 86 of Port Hawkesbury. It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Donald MacVarish Gillis, surrounded by his family, Donald passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born on April 4th, 1930, to the late Neil Charles and Florence Agnes (MacPherson) Gillis at Maple Brook, Inverness County. Donald spent his early years in Glendale where he farmed and made a home with Kathleen and his four boys. In 1978 he moved his family to Port Hawkesbury where he retired from Stora Forest Industries after 30 years. Donald will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. A hard worker, Donald was always ready to give his all, no matter at work, around his community or on the dance floor. He loved his Gaelic, his garden, his clocks and weekends at the cottage with friends and family. Donald is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen (MacIntyre); sons, Charles (Allison), Glenhaven; James (Maggie), Halifax; and David, Lake Echo; grandchildren, Robbi (Sam), Jenilee, Emmilou, Daniel, Travis, Amy, Mya; and siblings, Peggy MacDougall, Lake Anslie; Marie (Rannie) MacDonald, Judique; Janette MacVarish, Quincy, Mass.; Alexander "Sandy", Glendale; sister-in-law, Anna. In addition to his youngest son, Francis "Sack", Donald is predeceased by his parents; brothers, David and Duncan; sister-in-law, Isabel MacNeil; brothers-in-law, Jackie MacIntyre, Ainslie MacDougall, and Robert MacVarish; mother and father-in-law, John and Grace MacIntyre. Visitation scheduled for Sunday, April 3rd from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held Monday, April 4th at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating assisted by Deacon Berkley Guthro. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Mary of the Angels Parish Cemetery, Glendale. Memorial donations may be in Donald’s memory to St. Mary of the Angels Cemetery Fund, Glendale.
