Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
GILLIS, Catherine "Cathy" Marie (MacIntosh) - Lexington, Inverness Co., Cape Breton, NS. It is with heavy hearts, yet beautiful memories, that the family announces the death of Catherine "Cathy" Marie Gillis at home on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 with loving family at her side. Born in Sydney, Cathy was a daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Cameron) MacIntosh. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and gramma with family being the heart and soul of her life. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Port Hawkesbury. Cathy’s lifestyle was certainly passed on to her three sons who learned to appreciate the world around them as they grew up in Lexington with parents who provided the best possible opportunities for each to succeed in their chosen path as adults.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Duncan "DA"; sons, Duncan B. (Susan) and their two daughters, Rhianna and Breagha; Colin (Allison) and their two sons, Reid and Ewan; and Archie (Maggy). Cathy is also survived by her sister, Margie, and brothers, Alan, Paul, Fulton, and Tom. Cathy will be missed by her immediate family and also by many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends near and far.
Besides her parents, Cathy was predeceased by sisters, Martha Perez, Philippines; Mary "Dolly", New York; Sylvia MacLean, Ottawa; Marion Ripley, Rowden; and brothers, Larry (Jeanette), Sydney; John, Ontario; and Robert, Dartmouth.
Cathy welcomed people into her home with genuine hospitality, and was quick to prepare a good cup of tea, and perhaps a game of Tarbish.
Her love of nature was always evident in her enjoyment of watching the ocean and listening to the sounds of the waves as they rolled in to the shores of the many Cape Breton beaches which as a family they enjoyed. Scenic drives, trees with their fall foliage especially the vibrant reds, and simply sitting with family on their lawn swings overlooking their spectacular garden while watching the birds at their feeders with an eye out for the finches were times well spent.
On many an evening their family log home on the hill would come alive with the sound of a guitar as Cathy enjoyed listening to DA as he practised their country music favourites prior to kitchen parties held across the area. Unforgettable memories!
The family wish to express special thanks to the Palliative Care, Home Support and Continuing Care Teams for their compassionate care which made Cathy’s passing at home with family possible.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 9 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 10 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Cathy to Strait Area Palliative Care Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family: www.haverstocks.com
