Wilneff, Cecil Douglas Brian "Doug" - 59, Mulgrave.
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Doug on Friday, August 23, 2013 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. He is survived by his wife, Jane (Elms); sons, Jeffery (Jen) Calgary; step grandson, Jacob; Jonathan (Kristy), granddaughter, Harper Lee, Mulgrave; father-in-law, Atheling Elms; sisters, Barbara (Gary) England and Leona (Edgar) Dort. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Eric (Carola), Wayne, Ron (Sue), Mark (Mary); nephews and nieces Jennifer, April, Ethan, Dawn, Derek, Eric Jr., Erin, Ashli, Karen and Heather. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Moira (Ferguson) Wilneff, mother-in-law, Alma Elms, and nephew, Wesley Elms.
At the age of 17 years he followed his dad to sea fishing on offshore ships. Doug was also employed with Michelin Tire, Sedco Oil, and Maritect Security. The friends he gained through his years of employment remained lifetime connections.
Doug was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a friend to so many. He had a passion for the outdoors especially snowmobiling, fishing, and playing guitar. One of his many talents was his ability to keep a "Polaris Sled" fine-tuned. Many nights were spent in his shed with his boys and friends stripping down an engine for the next days run on the trails.\Playing guitar was a weekly event in his shed with his trio Karen, Benji, and Sean. Friends knew them as the "cellar fellas" who later became known as the "shed heads". At the end of a guitar night his favorite phrase was "Let’s have just one more drink and two more songs".
Diagnosed with cancer in December 2012, he faced his questionable journey with remarkable optimism. He kept his love for life the focus of all that he endured; never slowing to succumb to illness. Just days before his passing, he navigated the Strait of Canso at the wheel of Jonathans 32 foot cape islander.
The highlights of his days for the last 15 months were his daily visits from his granddaughter Harper Lee. She was certainly papa’s girl. Doug also enjoyed his weekend visits from his step grandson Jacob.
Doug would want us to thank each and every person he knew for any gesture big or small that somehow helped us during this journey. A special mention is extended to Dr. Gallivan, Dr. Cooper, Dr. MacKenzie, Dr. MacCormick, Heather Brander, Nancy Cameron, Karen Hoben, and the many nurses at St. Martha’s Hospital. Your professional and wonderful care will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers you may make donations in Doug’s honor to Strait Richmond or St. Martha’s Palliative Care or St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
