Fitton, Selwyn, Antigonish - October 6, 1945 - January 6, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Father, Brother, Grandfather and Friend, Selwyn Fitton at his residence in Antigonish. Originally from Halifax, Yorkshire, England he passed away Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at the age of 72. Selwyn lived his life in several places including Bible Hill, Aylesford, Hubbard’s, and Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia and a spent a number of years working and living his life in Opelika, Alabama.
Selwyn had a lifetime of accomplishments in his personal life and his career. As a young man growing up in Yorkshire, England he lived out a dream of being an accomplished musician playing sets with Tom Jones and earning himself an official stage name of "Tony Moraine" as lead singer of his band – he even played on the same stage as the Rolling Stones (just not the same night). He was never far from a microphone or a guitar for most of his life. He enjoyed playing Folk Music entertaining thousands at Music Festivals all over Nova Scotia. During his time in Truro, he was very active in the Scottish Society, which later became the North British Society to encompass fellow Yorkshire men like himself. The most important concert for Selwyn was always singing and entertaining his family and friends. In his older years he would find great comfort listening to his favourite composers Bach and Mozart.
He was born to Herbert and Eva Fitton in Post WW2 England where he spent his early life as many of those in his generation and dreamt of a life to move to Canada. In 1970, Selwyn immigrated to Canada with his young family to chase the allure of the new world and soon after arriving in Canada made his way to Truro, Nova Scotia. Selwyn enjoyed a long, successful career in Technical Management and he began his career journey at Crossly Karastan in Truro, Nova Scotia. In the 80’s, Selwyn moved his career to Michelin Tires in Waterville, Nova Scotia and during his twenty-year career he rose through the ranks to become Department Manager in the Waterville Plant. Selwyn studied at St Anne’s University on the South Shore of Nova Scotia to learn to speak French so that he could work in Michelin’s Plant in France for six months.
It was while he was working in Alabama in 1996, Selwyn suffered a life changing massive, debilitating stroke that left him unable to make the music his children fondly remembered him for. He spent the remainder of his life fiercely independent, despite his disability; sometimes this would be confused for stubbornness. Not accepting his limitations set him apart, living independently, right to the end of his life.
Selywn was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Eva (Booth) Fitton of Boothtown, West Yorkshire. He is survived by his children, Mark, Louisdale; Jane (Rod), Toronto, Ontario; Simon, Hebden Bridge, England; James (Irene) Oshawa, Ontario; brother, Ken (Margaret), Boston Spa, England and sister, Sylvia, Boothtown, England; grandchildren, Thomas, Ethan, Andrew, Sarah and Emily.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a personal charity of your choice. The family is looking forward to looking back and reveling in the adventures and passions uniquely attributed to their father. He will be forever remembered in all of our hearts. May peace find you in heaven Dad!
