ELMS, Leslie Eugene 'Les' -78, North Grant, Antigonish Co., passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015, at home. Born in Rear Monastery, Antigonish Co., he was a son of the late Joseph Norman and Elsie Mae (Whalen) Elms. Les worked in the coal mines in Glace Bay as a young man, before moving to Toronto in 1958, where he worked as a machinist for 30 years with Maple Screw Machines, returning to Nova Scotia upon retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, tending to his vegetable garden and travelling with his beloved Rene. Surviving are his partner, Catherine "Rene" O’Dowd; sisters, Alice Ponzi, Mary Thompson, both of Toronto; Joan (Francis) Paris, New Glasgow; Lillian (Wiley) Cain, Montague Gold Mines; Carol Ann (Sam) Okpro, Pierrefonds, Quebec; Angela MacKinnon, Port Hawkesbury; foster sister, Raine Jones, Dartmouth; brothers, Gerald, Wilfred, Donald (Velma),all of Rear Monastery; foster brothers, Storm Jones, Toronto; William Jones, Edmonton; special uncle, Joseph (Fannie) Howell, Glace Bay; special cousin, Tye Elms, Toronto; godchildren, Cyndi-Mae Cain, Montague Gold Mines; Sammy J. Okpro, Edmonton; sister-in-law, Agnes Elms, Dartmouth; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and special friends. Leslie was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth and Frank; brothers-in-law, Angus MacKinnon and Paul Ponzi. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Tracadie United Baptist Church and from where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Tracadie United Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
