Caroline Gould - 91, Waycobah First Nation, born in Chapel Island on October 25, 1919, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, friends and relatives at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on Saturday, October 22, 2011.
She is survived by daughters, Ethel Johnson (Howard), Eskasoni; Marjorie Gould, Waycobah; Margaret Pelletier (Richard), New Mills, N.B.; Eunice Gould, Eskasoni and Annie Gould, Eskasoni. Caroline is also survived by brother-in-law, Noel J. Gould; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Roddie J. Gould; parents, Michael L. and Janie (Peck) Paul, Chapel Island; 11 siblings, and six grandchildren.
Caroline was a respected elder, mentor, teacher, and a renowned basketmaker who made great contributions to the preservation of Mi’kmaw culture, language and the arts. Among her many awards and distinctions in recognition for her artistic accomplishments in Basketry, she was honoured by being delegated by the province of Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq Nation to present a basket to Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Nova Scotia on June 28, 2010.
Visitation will take place at 160 Reservation Rd. (Fishery Building) on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. (family) and after 4 p.m. for the public. Funeral service will be at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Blessed Kateri Parish, Waycobah, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 with Father Robert McNeil officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Everyone is invited to attend a Feast (Dinner) and Salite (Auction) at the We’koqma’q Community Hall following the burial service.
