LUMSDEN, Russell Ambrose – 90, Canso, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 29, 2012, in Milford Haven Home for Special Care, Guysborough. Born on July 10, 1921, he was the youngest child of the late Ernest and Eunice (Snow) Lumsden. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (MacKinnon) Lumsden; brothers, Kenneth, Ronald and Elliot; sister, Beatrice. Russie along with his father and brothers spent decades in the inshore fishery, hauling lobster traps and pursing the trap. His passing represents the end of a way of life that remained unchanged for numerous years. No one ever made a visit to the Lumsden home without allowing lots of time for friendly talking in the kitchen, or one of the many sheds that dotted the property. Russie spent endless hours with brother Elliot (Skinny) cutting wood, mowing hay and fishing. He served in World War II with the Pictou Highlanders and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #46, Canso. Russie is survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins. The Lumsden Family wishes to especially thank Buzz and Dorothy Newell and their family for the tender care given to Russie over the past 15 years. Dorothy’s care allowed him to remain in the family home until the last few years. Dorothy’s daughter Emerald, Russie’s Godchild, was a bright light in his life. Thanks are also extended to the staff of Milford Haven Home for Special Care and to Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso, from 2-4 and 6-9p.m. Monday, April 9th. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, April 10th at 11a.m. from Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, with Father Andrew Gillies officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
