Richards, Laurier Francis – Canso. It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces the passing of their dear brother and uncle, Laurier Richards, on Friday, September 19, 2014 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso at the age of 79. Born in Canso, Guysborough County, Laurier was a son to the late Wilfred and Ethel (Manuel) Richards. He was a beloved partner to the late Frances Keefe and together they created a welcoming home for family and friends where many Sunday suppers were enjoyed and games of cards were played. Laurier was employed at the Canso Fish Plant until his retirement in the early 1990’s. He is survived by his sisters, Donna (Earl) Horne and Gerry (Danny) Carrigan; sisters-in-law, Bentie Richards, Mae Richards and Joan Horne; brothers-in-law, Art Livingston, Kenny Carrigan and John Baker; nieces, Darlene (Mel) Myatt, Marlene (Rob) Cashin, Angie (Stan) George, Beth (Rob) Fraser, Lori-Leigh (AJ) Carrigan; nephews, Barry (Mary) Richards, Scott (Eden) Livingston, Jim (Wendy) Horne, Rick (Rolanda) Carrigan; and numerous great-nieces and great- nephews. Laurier was predeceased by his mother, Ethel, and father, Wilfred "Bill"; common-law wife, Fran; brothers, Bill, Albert, Jim and nephew, Jimmy; sisters, June and Myrna; brother-in-law, Jim; great-nephew, Stanley Arthur (in infancy) and great-niece, Megan (in infancy). Visitation will take place from 2-9 p.m. today (Monday), in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, with Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held at the Shamrock Club after the interment. Donations in Laurier’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
