England, David Joseph , Age 78, Port Hawkesbury passed away peacefully Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Middle Melford, Guysborough County, David was the son of the late Robert and Lydia (Hadley) England. David was loving, gentle soul who experienced true joy and satisfaction while helping others. He will always be remembered for the delightful sparkle in his kind eyes and the deep affection he held for all around him. Dave was happiest while seeing the world through the eyes of his son and grandchildren and delighted in their many accomplishments.
In his early years he worked for the CNR in Halifax where he met the love of his life, Iona, before returning to the Strait Area where he worked at Nova Scotia Pulp (Mill) for 34 years. David devoted his life to his family and church, touching many lives in his community. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury, recently recognized by his Church Family for forty years of dedication and commitment. He was a faithful choir member, never missing a practice or tea and cookies afterward. He was a member of Temple #57 Masonic Lodge, Mulgrave and a former member of the Strait Pirate Junior Hockey Executive and life long supporter.
David, affectionately known as Papa, is survived by his son, Corey and daughter-in -law, Tanya, Port Hawkesbury; grandson, Logan Chisholm (Lindsay), Edmonton and granddaughter, Sam England, Port Hawkesbury; sister, Edna Quenneville (late John Hurdell), Hamilton; brother, Winston England (Grace), Troy; sisters-in-law, Marie England, Port Hawkesbury; Clementine England, Wolfville; Christina Hurley, Sydney Mines; brothers-in-law, Colin MacIntyre, Bras d’Or; Edward MacIntyre, Ontario; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Iona England; sisters, Marie Diggins, Florence Hadley, Hazel Stanton, Ada Durant and Phyllis Cameron; brothers, Harry, Francis, Tom, Ernest and Berkley. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the staff of the Stroke Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and the staff of Strait Richmond Hospital for their loving care and compassion. Papa had a special relationship with all of the Inverness County Home Support workers and was so appreciative of their support.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2015 with Rev. Peter MacRae officiating. A reception will take place immediately following the funeral service in the church hall. Burial to follow in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Middle Melford. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
