Obituary
Please share a memory of Captain to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
RIDEOUT, Captain Joseph Paul Andrew- Age 82, Canso, returned to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 17, 2018, in the Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. He was surrounded by his family and smothered with love while riding out his final wave. Joe was born in Saint Pierre and Michelon to the late George Eugene Aguste and Adele Loise Marguerite (Leclavier) Rideout Sr.
Moving to Terrenceville at an early age of 6 after the death of his mother, Adelle. He was raised by his father and the community as was the way back then. Joe had a great fondness and respect for the sea. His fishing career started in his early teens. Learning as you go, he worked his way up to Captain. A title well earned. His lengthy career took him to so many ports including Denmark, Greenland and so many more. Making many lifelong friends along the way.
Joe can best be described as a kind and soft hearted man. Although on the boats he kept a tight ship. Gaining much respect and admiration from all who sailed with him. Early days while in shore, our kitchen table would be filled with shipmates and friends, sharing fishing stories with a bottle of Captain Morgan to keep the stories flowing. He loved NFLD and country music and sang and played the guitar. Joe was known for catching his quota and getting home safe. Earning him a acknowledgement of top Captain one year.
Joe found his way to Canso in 1965 and worked at various companies until his retirement with Mercy Seafood’s, as Captain of the Mercy Venture. Joe was also a successful tuna fisherman with his buddy, Tom. It’s in Canso he met Stella and had three children. Family was his life and we’ve done our best to show and give back all the love he has given us.
He was predeceased by his parents, Adele and George Rideout; brother, George; sister, Theresa; beloved daughter, Janet. Left to mourn him and keep his memory alive are his loving wife, Stella of 53 years; sister, Rita, France; daughter, Lori (Kevin), Halifax; Rita (Kenny), Halifax; honorary daughter, Wendy (Jay), Sydney; son-in-law, Glen Simpson, NL; grandchildren, Max, Matthew, Scott, Lacey and Faith; brother and sisters-in-law, Marion, Myrna and Everette, Arnold, Katherine, Johnny and Rollie; nieces, Annebelle and Marie, Halifax; nephews, Jerome and Didier, France; as well as Dean, Derrick, Dianna, Chad, Vicki, Susan, Lloyd, Rodney, Juanita, Kenny, Odessa and Ralph.
Special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and all the staff at the Eastern Memorial Hospital for the tender love and care that he got during this time. So grateful to Rhonda. Your dedication to what you do is a gift to us all. Until we meet again Joe, Dad, Poppy and Captain.
