DIGDON, Roy Walton – Mulgrave, Guysborough Co., passed away Thursday, October 20th, 2011, in his 89th year, with his loving wife of sixty-five years, Hattie "Ruth" (Scranton) Digdon by his side. Roy was born in Mulgrave, the son of Freeman Wylie and Ida Mae (Crittenden) Digdon. He continued to live, work and raise his family in Mulgrave. Roy first worked with his father’s company, F.W. Digdon and Sons, until 1972 when he went to work at Point Tupper Shipyard. In the same year he and his wife founded their own company, Roy W. Digdon Construction Ltd. Roy sold the company in 1983 when he developed a heart condition. Roy then worked for Van Zutphen Bros. for the next five years, after which he founded his second company, Mulgrave Excavating Ltd., which he and his wife operated until 1994. Roy was very active in Trinity United Church in Mulgrave where he was a Life Elder. Roy was a member of Temple Lodge 57 in Mulgrave and was honored with a 55-year bar. In Keystone Chapter in Port Hawkesbury he received his 50-year pin. He had also been a Master and High Priest. He was also a member of Faith Chapter, No. 57 Order of Eastern Star, Philae Temple in Halifax and Causeway Shrine Club. Roy was a very active member in the town of Mulgrave and served as member and Fire Chief of the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Department. Roy was well known for his love of auction 45’s, darts, for plowing streets and driveways, lobster and his generous nature.
Roy was a wonderful father and grandfather to his family. His grandchildren and great-grand children were very dear to him. He was a friend to all, putting the needs of others before his own. Roy is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Lorraine, Halifax; Gloria (Rodger) French, Kentville; Nancy (David) Tibbo, Mulgrave; Barbara Digdon, Pictou; Sharon Digdon, Halifax; son, Terry (Leanne) Ehler, Mulgrave; grandchildren, Shelly (Shawn) Mansour-Moralli, Ardyth (Eric) Geldart, Tanya Tibbo, Cathryn (Devin) Coulter, Matthew Tibbo, Antonia Bouchie, Troy Bouchie, Chandra Bouchie, and Brooklyn, Myah and Cole Ehler; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Skylar, Shealee, Camron, Ava, Isabella, Lucas and Oliver and many nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his daughter, Carol Anne Digdon, brothers, Willoughby and Allison Digdon, sister, Anna Humby and nephew, Dwayne Digdon. A funeral service will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Mulgrave 2p.m. Sunday with Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Burial in Trinity United Church Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Mulgrave Fire Hall. Donations may be made to the Trinity United Church in Mulgrave or the Shriner’s Travel Fund.
