DORT, Harry Frederick Sr. "Bow Bender" – 84, Half Island Cove, Guysborough Co., passed away on Tuesday January 21, 2014, in the Guysborough Memorial Hospital, with family by his side. Born in Dort’s Cove, Guysborough Co., he was a son of the late Clarence Murphy and Clara Dort.
Harry was a fisherman for many years on the trawlers in Canso. He also worked on the lake boats in Ontario, he helped to unload small fishing boats in Canso and also was a lobster fisherman. Harry truly enjoyed trout and salmon fishing and enjoyed teaching people how to fly fish. He tied his own fishing flies and taught others how to tie them as well. He enjoyed hunting and collecting his recyclables.
Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Alma (Dort); children, Gloria (Darryl) David, Half Island Cove; Jerome (Angela) Dort, Montague PEI; Charity (Eric) Collings, Canso; Harry (Rita) Dort Jr., Eastern Passage; Marina (Shaun) George, Halifax; Caroline Knickle, New Germany; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Lisa (Weeks) Johnson.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Monday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday from St. James Anglican Church, Halfway Cove with Rev. Darroch Fagan officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the family or Guysborough Memorial Hospital.
