Dort, Lawrence Thomas - Age 81 of Canso, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Canso, he was a son of the late William and Margaret (Samson) Dort. Lawrence worked his lifetime with various fish companies in Canso and Glace Bay. He was a charter member of Canso Lions Club, a member of Canso Area Development Association; he served as Chairperson of the former Canso High School Board and represented the area on the Board of Canso Regional Vocational School. He was a devout member of Star of the Sea Parish. He is survived by wife, Emily (McKeough); as well as son, Larry (Marylynn); daughters, Lorna (Paul) Horne, Irene (Stephane) Gagnon, Giselle Dort, grandchildren, Glenn and Shawna Horne, Amy Dort, Jacob and Samuel Gagnon and great-grandson, SJ; daughter-in-law, Donna Dort. Lawrence is also survived by sisters, Helen Bobier, Edmonton; and Peggy Boudreau, Antigonish; brothers, Ernie and David, both of Dieppe. He was predeceased by sisters, Alice, Elizabeth and Marguerite. Visitation will be Friday, June 20, 2014, from 2 - 9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, June 21, at 11 a.m. from Star of the Sea Parish, Canso with Father Dan MacDonald officiating.
