DeCoste, Ambrose Adrian – Mulgrave, age 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2016, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born on October 7, 1925, in Mulgrave, he was a son of the late William and Martha (LeVangie) DeCoste.
Ambrose joined the army at the age of 18 and served in WWll overseas from 1944-1946. He was a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry during the war and joined The North Nova Scotia Highlanders Infantry in the Occupational Forces Peace Keeping overseas. Returning from the war, he met and fell in love with Maud Marchand and they were married on September 22, 1947 until her death, October 13, 1976. They had 9 children. He worked at the CNR on the SS Scotia in Mulgrave from 1946-1955 and at the Acadian Fisheries for 8 years. He was a member of ILA Union and did stevedoring in Mulgrave until he retired at the age of 80.
After being widowed for almost 30 years he married Violet (Morrison) Colyer, on February 14, 1997, an old childhood sweetheart, until she preceded him on April 19, 2015. He was truly loved by her children and grandchildren.
Ambrose was a very witty and loveable man who loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, playing pool "and he could teach his competition a few tricks". He also loved his weekly bingo and card games, especially crib, where he met so many friends. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Dept. for several years and a lifetime Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Cambrai Branch 37 of Mulgrave, where he was very active, especially during Remembrance Day. Ambrose loved spending time with his family, all 5 generations and especially his grandchildren and will be sorely missed by all who loved and admired him.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Glenn Gallivan; Dr. Eckert; the Nurses at St. Martha's Hospital; Guysborough Home Support Care Givers and his favourite personal workers Diane & Wanda.
