It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond William Alexander McNamara of Whiteside, Richmond County, Cape Breton on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. He was born November 10, 1929, to the late Greg and Cecilia (Poirier) McNamara. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Lower River Inhabitants. Raymond worked with the CNR for several years. He also worked at Stora Forest Industries for over 30 years until his retirement in 1989.
He is survived by sons, Jerry of Sydney, Australia and Shaun of Whiteside. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Valerie and an infant daughter, Mary Deborah Ann. He is also survived by his sister, Marie Cogswell. Raymond is survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Ted, Donnie and Francis; sisters, Pauline Proctor, Della Proctor, Marguerite in infancy.
Ray took great pride in his service as a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish Council as well as the many projects he was involved with in the parish. As a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, he was very proud to have served as the Faithful Navigator in WB Macleod Assembly and as one of the founding members he was first Faithful Navigator Msgr. Donald MacPherson Assembly. He also held several positions within the Cape Nova Council. In his later years there was nothing he enjoyed more than listening to good fiddle music, spending time at an afternoon Ceilidh in Judique or finding a good card game.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held Friday, April 21 at 11 a.m. in St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, Lower River Inhabitants with Father Callistus Abazie officiating. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Whiteside. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish or St. Patrick’s Cemetery Fund, Whiteside. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
