Obituary
Please share a memory of Leonard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
CONNOLLY, Leonard - His belief in "God takes care" guided Leonard Connolly, husband, father, grandfather, great grand-father, brother and uncle until his peaceful death surrounded by his loved ones on February 3rd, 2013. Leonard was born July 18, 1933 to Christina (Chisholm) and Edward Connolly of Guysborough Intervale.
From this community that Leonard loved and was so proud of, he raised his large family and established his company Con & Con Construction in 1976. Leonard was recognized this past summer for his significant contributions to fastpitch softball, one of which was the sponsorship of the highly competitive and renowned Con & Con Josts senior team. He derived much enjoyment from watching his sons and grandsons compete in this sport, travelling far and wide to take in a game. Leonard was a well-known and enjoyed presence at many local card plays. His day was not complete without a crib game between his fellow card-playing buddies. Leonard was an avid reader and his knowledge and wisdom on many topics made him a great conversationalist. He was a staunch Progressive Conservative supporter, always ready to defend his political view when challenged. Leonard spent many pleasurable hours fishing and his enjoyment of this activity was made greater when his sons, grandsons, brothers or nephews tagged along. Leonard had a great love of music, and he and Anna made their home the place for many sing-songs over the years. Leonard found much contentment at ‘the cabin’, looking up the river at the Intervale. There with his beloved Anna they welcomed their children, 36 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, along with many friends and extended family. "Granddad" had a big hug and smile for every one of his grand and great-grandchildren and would tell them, "You’re a powerful girl/boy!" Leonard was often heard saying, "How blessed am I, to have all of you". We were blessed to have had him and mourn his passing.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years Anna (Chisholm), his eleven children Mary Theresa (Danny) Rodgers, Stephen (Cindy), David (Marcia), Pius (Lynn), Ruth (Dave) Welton, Susan (John) Delorey, Paul (Janice), Richard (Kim), Gloria, Graham (Randilee), Edward (Corry) as well as his brothers Kenneth (Margaret), John (Bessie) and Cyril (Grace) and sister Irene (Clarence Long), brothers-in-law Henry and Charlie Chisholm, his special nephew Phillip and many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Joseph and daughter Monica in infancy, granddaughter Marie in infancy, parents, brothers Ronald, Eric and sister-in-law Rita. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank-you to his long-time physician and friend Dr. Anita Foley for her care and support during Dad’s illness, Dr’s Ayoub, Bell, and Ranjini, the wonderful staff of Guysborough Memorial Hospital as well as Palliative Care staff Karen Hoben and Maureen Long.
