Please share a memory of Simon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Cremo, Simon Peter "Chum" age 52 of We’koqma’q First Nation, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late John Gaulbert, Sr. and Mary Theresa (Sylliboy) Cremo.
Simon "Chum" was known as "Chum" throughout all the communities. People were puzzled what his real name was. He was a very active member. He loved playing baseball in our community. He joined the team called Whycocomagh Warriors in his early years. He worked at Eddie’s Gas Bar for so many years then he moved in working for Whycocomagh Band for the Fisheries.
In his spare time he found a passion for music. He decided to buy a turntable and a lot of records. He played at our community hall for a lot of community events. This was the time "Chum Machine" was born. You knew when Chum was playing; you could see flashing lights, hear loud music, and a lot of people. It was weekend excitement for all. Chum was a man of many skills, he played Santa Claus. He was willing to lend a hand to any cause.
He was a member of We’koqma’q Volunteer Fire Department, this was his second home, because he made sure everything was in good working order and made sure the place was clean. Simon was a member of Blessed Kateri Parish, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, We’koqma’q.
Surviving are his brothers, John William "Tiny" (Karen), William Benjamin "Willie", all of We’koqma’q; Leonard Harvey (Elizabeth), Pictou Landing; Clifford James "Jake" (Valerie), Membertou; sisters, Nancy Ann, We’koqma’q; Yvonne (Rod), Orangedale; uncles, Grand Chief Ben (Marie) Sylliboy and Matthew Cremo; aunts, Margaret Poulette and Hazel Herney; godchildren, late CJ Bernard Phillip and Alyssa Leroy, and several nieces and nephews.
