COLE, Captain Patrick Howard "Howie"- of Queensport, Guysborough Co., age 78 passed away Thursday, December 24, 2015 in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Canso, he was the son of the late Martin and Wardie (Fitzgerald) Cole. Howie was certified Master Home Trade with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans "DFO" for 35 years. He was highly regarded for his seamanship and worked his way up from Deckhand to Captain. He sailed on the CCGS Edward Cornwallis and the CCGS Labrador, the old Cygnus and was Captain on the Chebucto, Chester and Tem .He was involved with numerous search and rescue operations on George’s Bank and the Sable Island Bank areas. He was past Commodore of the Strait of Canso Yacht Club, and past board member of the Strait Area Waterfront Development, Port Hawkesbury. He had a passion for the ocean, loved his family and friends unconditionally, had a soft spot in his heart for children and dogs, and will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his kind ways. He is survived by his wife, Marion Lamey Cole; step-daughter, Melanie MacKenzie, Dartmouth; sons, James (Colleen), Red Deer, Alberta; Rodney (Lorraine) Dartmouth; step-son, Brent MacKenzie, Dartmouth; sisters, Mary Vargo, St. Thomas, Ontario; Rose (Percy) Feltmate, The Tickle; Margaret (John) Armsworthy, Canso; brothers, Austin (Dorothy), Brampton, Ontario; Martin and Gerald, both of Canso; grandchildren, Devin and Dylan Cole, Red Deer, Alberta; step-grandchildren, Derek Snook, Dartmouth; Natalie Woolstencroft, Calgary, Alberta. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his sister, Hazel Keith. Visitation will be in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, December 30th. Funeral service will take place Thursday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. in Wesley United Church, Guysborough with Rev. Heather Manuel officiating. Burial in the Boylston United Church Cemetery.
