COFFIN, Gertrude Lillian "Gertie" - We are so sad to inform of the death of our mom, Gertie (Ryan) Coffin, at St. Martha's Hospital on Sunday, September 8, 2019, after a brief battle with cancer. Mom was born to Fred and Edna (Warner) Ryan 85 years ago in Port Hawkesbury. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Alva; also by her sisters, Irene Murray, Stella MacMaster, Kaye Murphy, Betty Murphy and by her brothers, Ernest, Henry, Gardiner and Freddie Surviving are her daughters, Debbie Coffin (Guy Beaulieu), Timberlea; Joanne Coffin (Jim Fry), Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Nicole, Kerry, Aidan and Josh. Also her cherished friend, Marie and her husband, Howard MacKinnon. Mom had many adventures during her life. She loved to fish and she and dad spent lots of time in their camper at their favourite fishing spots. She also became interested in the fiddle and gave fiddle lessons and started the Strait Area Scottish Strings Society which she was so proud of. She loved to travel with her daughters and the three had many trips together from the British Isles to Vegas and a few spots in between; a great trip to Disney with her kids and again with her grandchildren, a wonderful trip which we all loved. In later years she got into making quilts and made many for family and friends. Her summers were spent in PEI - dad's home, at the "old school" near Fortune Bridge. So many good times there with our families and friends. She was mom to us but was a mother and aunt and Nan to so many who wanted her advice, hugs or just her common sense and we didn't mind sharing her. She will be missed but left us all with great memories. We would like to thank all the health care staff involved with mom's care - you were so helpful through a difficult time for mom and made her last weeks a little easier. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019, in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Visitation from 12 to 2 p.m. with a short service at 2 p.m. with a light lunch to follow. Burial at a later date in Bay Fortune United Church Cemetery, Bay Fortune, PEI. No flowers please just your good thoughts and memories. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. We had hoped to have her a few months longer but her pain is over now. Love you mom.... you gave us a great life.
