ELLINGBO, Boye Karl Hammerstad – 93, Port Hawkesbury, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Baerum, Norway, he was a son of the late Ole Boyesen Hammerstad and Borghild Johanne Solhjem.
He was a member of the resistance in occupied Norway, joining the Norwegian Air Force following liberation. He was then transferred to London, England, where he worked with Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission, assisting in the handing back of Norwegian vessels after the war. He met Grace Smith on a blind date, proposed the next day, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. 21 years into that marriage, they had one son, John. In 1960 they moved to Nova Scotia, where he worked at Stora Forest Industries until his retirement in 1984. He was a musician, dancer, outdoorsman and grandfather. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, England and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 in Port Hawkesbury.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Grace (Smith); son, John (Judy); granddaughters, Molly, Tessa and Jenna; grandsons, Nicholas and Kenzie. He was predeceased by his sister, Ingrid. There will be no visitation.
A Legion service will be held at 2p.m. on Sunday, September 2, 2012, in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, with Art Riley, Legion Chaplain officiating. A reception will follow in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
