Frank Lombardo of Guysborough, Nova Scotia died peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2015 in Guysborough Memorial Hospital at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. Frank is survived by his wife, Doreen (Halloran); his children, Nancy (Phil) O’Regan, Sharon (Mike) Hogan, Peter (Cathy) and Brent (Rhonda); grandchildren, Dawn, Katie, Linda, Mathew, Kayla, Kelly, Hanna, Taylor, Teagan, Keaton and step-grandchildren, Craig, Brad, Jen and Graham. He was a proud great-grandfather to Madison, Gianna, Josie, Maelle, Evelyn and Jackson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pietro and Francesca Lombardo and his siblings, Andrea, Francesca, Andrew, Jean, Frances, Joey and Rocco. Frank was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 22, 1924. He graduated from Carleton University in 1952 with a certificate in Engineering. He was awarded Athlete of the Year at Carleton where he "lettered" in his senior year, competing in football, swimming and hockey. Frank proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 81, Guysborough where he held executive positions and demonstrated his strong commitment to honouring and supporting veterans. He worked for the Government of Canada, in the Department of Energy Mines and Resources for 52 years, both full-time as the Chief Technical Officer in charge of the Canadian Seismological Network and later as a part time technician working from his retirement home in Guysborough. He stayed in contact with many of his work colleagues over the years and appreciated their calls and cards. During a field trip to Nova Scotia in 1955 he met and later married Doreen Halloran with the blessing of his beloved in-laws Mary and Patrick Halloran. Frank and Doreen lived and raised their family in Ottawa, keeping strong connections to the Lombardo, Halloran and Phalen families. Frank’s love for the community of Guysborough was strong and after many years of summer visits, he retired and became a permanent resident. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Ann’s Parish and supported the Guysborough Lions Club, Guysborough Volunteer Fire Department, Meals on Wheels, East Guysborough Forest Owners, Federal Superannuates National Association, Nova Scotia Branch. He was a Nova Scotia Administrative Justice of the Peace for many years and presided over many weddings and gatherings for both family and community members. Grampy Frank, The "Godfather" will be missed by all of his extended family of sisters and brothers-in laws, cousins, nieces and nephews to whom he provided advice, guidance and support. Through colourful commentary he arm-chair coached NHL, CFL and MLB teams. He was an avid Ottawa Senator’s fan and always held out hope for the Blue Jays. He loved to play cards, fish mackerel with his buddies and spend time with family at Farm Lake and Eldon’s Camp. After giving so much of his life to others, it was Frank’s turn to receive through loving and compassionate palliative care, at home and in the best health care facilities. He was supported in living every day to the fullest by "Frankie’s Angels" - his care team of family, relatives, friends, caregivers, and health care professionals. Visitation will be Monday, June 15 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Members of Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 81, Guysborough are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. for a legion service for their late comrade. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 16 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough with Father Danny MacLennan officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Guysborough Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Program or the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 81, Guysborough.
