Ellingbo, Grace – 91, Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 19th, 2016 at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Born in Wood Green, North London, England, she was the daughter of the late Matilda and Albert Smith.
During WWII she joined the Civil Defense, then at 17 years of age, enlisted in the Royal Air Force/Women’s Air Force and served until the end of 1946. Trained as a teleprint operator and stationed at "The Moat" deep within the Plymouth Rock, she was on duty during much of the Battle of the Atlantic, during operations like the chase of the German Battleship "Shcharnhost". Her famed "signal" that announced the end of the war in Europe resides in the museum at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury.
She met Boye Ellingbo on a blind date, he proposed the next day, and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage. 21 years into that marriage, they had one son, John.
In 1960, they moved to Nova Scotia where Grace became the first permanent employee in Canada of Nova Scotia Pulp (now Port Hawkesbury Paper). She was Secretary and Co-Chairperson of the first Festival of the Strait, and Program Director for the Folk-Art Council of Canada Concert celebrating Centennial year.
In later years she was employed as a Librarian at Eastern Counties Regional Library at SAERC, and volunteered with the "Little Theatre Club" and as local Badge Director for Cubs/Scouts Canada. As a veteran and member of the Royal Canadian legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury she would speak to students about her experiences during WWII.
Surviving are her son, John (Judy); granddaughters Molly, Tessa and Jenna; grandsons Nicholas and Kenzie. She was predeceased by her husband, Boye; sisters, Doddy, Evelyn, Jo and Winnie; brothers, Albert and Cyril.
