MacEachern (Burke), Catherine Elizabeth "Kaye"– 89, Port Hawkesbury, peacefully passed away Easter Monday, April 17, 2017, in the Port Hawkesbury nursing home. Kaye was born December 27, 1927 to the late Michael Joseph and Catherine "Cassie" (Brewer) Burke, in North Sydney. Kaye was the oldest of 11 children and lived in North Sydney. Although she loved school, she left, to help support her younger siblings. She worked for the Maritime Telegraph & Telephone Company as a Chief Operator in Bridgetown, Canning and North Sydney. She worked until she married John MacEachern formerly of Maple Brook, Inverness County in 1958 when her focus became raising their family. Kaye was a woman of tremendous faith. She looked forward to attending mass and had an intimate relationship with her well-worn Rosary beads. Kaye’s greatest treasures were her grandchildren who will always remember their special times with Nana. Family gatherings brought her great pleasure especially when her grandchildren were around. Kaye was known as a talented meticulous knitter, often being asked to make sweaters for family and friends. She will also be remembered for her delicious baking skills in particular her apple pies, fruit cakes and her many preserves such as apple jelly and pickling. Kaye is survived by her children, Anne Marie (Gary) Westenenk, North Bay, Ontario; Ian, Sedgewick, Alberta; Blaise (Cheryl Baldwin) Port Hawkesbury; Kevin (Dorraine Brophy), Dundee; and Patricia, Halifax; eleven grandchildren, Gerda (Scott) Mcfadden, Daniel, Heather, Kyle, Emily, Nicole, Katie, Jenna, Siobhan, Jade and Erin; sisters Regis Cameron, North Sydney; Georgie (Vince) Muise, Sydney River; Marie Romeo, North Sydney; Monica (Brian) Shebib, North Sydney; brother Thomas, North Sydney.. Kaye was predeceased by her husband John, parents and siblings, Teresa McKinnon, Vaughan Bagnell, Peggy Barrie, Joseph, Lloyd and Michael in infancy. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27 from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, St. Joseph Parish or Cemetery Fund.
