Beaton, Joan Lorraine - 61, Port Hawkesbury. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Joan passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Joan was raised and predeceased by her grandparents, Michael and Florence McNamara of Harborview, Inv. Co.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Martin Beaton, sons, Tommy (Brenda), Port Hawkesbury; Jason (Aya) and Christopher (Rina) both of Calgary, Alberta; three grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Daniel and his mom, Trish MacLean; Alexis and Finley Beaton. Joan is also survived by mother, Mable Cambria and her step-father Frank Cambria, sisters, Lorraine (Celeste) and Margaret (Robert) Fitzpatrick all of Boston, Mass. as well as many family members and close friends.
Joan was a long time employee of Sobeys in Port Hawkesbury. During her work life she made many friends and acquaintances. She was union chairperson for the C.A.W. for 15 years. She was involved with St. Joseph’s Parish Council and The Development and Peace Organization. She especially enjoyed her involvement in Under the Map Theatre where she performed in many skits, dinner theatre and "The Hoot".
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial at a later date. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made in Joan’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society, Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or a charity of choice.
