Bray, Joseph "Joe" Colin – 64, Canso, Guysborough Co., passed away as a result of a fishing accident on Sunday, September 22, 2013. Born on August 7, 1949 in Canso he was the son of the late Josiah and Geneva (Lumsden) Bray. Joe recently retired after 44 years of service with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans/Canadian Coast Guard. He was highly regarded for his 14 years as Captain of the MV Navicula. In 2006, Joe was awarded the Bedford Institute of Oceanography's Annual Beluga Award, which recognized the high degree of respect that his crew had for him and the reputation for high standards that vessels under his command had throughout Atlantic Canada. Joe was a very kind and well respected man who enjoyed spending time on the water, in his garage, driving his motorbike, playing darts at the Canso Legion, walking along the Dover boardwalk and visiting his wife's family in Dover. Joe deeply missed his beloved dog Harley. He also enjoyed visiting his many friends on his daily walk around town. Joe was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Canso, a regular parishioner at St. Paul's United Church, Canso and a member of the Masonic Eastern Light Lodge, Guysborough. Most of all, Joe deeply loved his wife, children and two grandchildren and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will deeply missed by all of them. Joe is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda (Bouchie), Canso; children, Nancy (Adam Biggs), Halifax; John (Jennifer Styles), Southampton, ON; Diane (Travis Smith), Halifax; grandsons, Josiah "Joey" and Harrison Bray, Southampton, ON; brother, Paul (Dorothy), Halifax; sister, Sharon (Jean) St. Pierre, Dartmouth; niece, Tanya St. Pierre (Ryan Wheaton), Dartmouth; cousins, Gerald Lumsden, Canso; Margaret May Greencorn, Canso; Roberta Lumsden and Carol Lumsden, Bedford; and many nieces and nephews on his wife's side of the family. He was predeceased by his mother, Geneva (Lumsden) and father Josiah. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, September 27th from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral service will be held 11a.m. Saturday, September 28th in St. Paul's United Church, Canso, with Rev. Heather Manuel officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made in Joe's memory to St. Paul's United Church or Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso.
