BERNARD, Walter Charles – 67, We’koqma’q First Nation passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born in Eskasoni, he was a son of the late Charles Andrew and Annie Mae (Sylliboy) Bernard.
Walter was a member of the Elder’s Council and a member of the Cape Breton Chapter of the Relay for Life. He also was a member of the United Ostomy Association, Cape Breton Chapter and a champion for Native Rights.
Surviving are his daughters, Ericka (Fabian) Toney, Amy (G.T.), both of We’koqma’q; Michelle Marshall, Chapel Island; sons, Jonathon Marshall, Chapel Island; Andrew Phillip, We’koqma’q; sister, Julena Bernard, We’koqma’q; brothers, Alan (Juliana), John Wayne and Peter, all of We’koqma’q; grandchildren, Dylan, Evander, Lara and George Jr.; great-granddaughter, Kaylan Rae; godchildren, Linda (Barry) Crowe, We’koqma’q; Vanessa (Freddy) Bernard, Alberta; Dominique Paul, We’koqma’q. He was predeceased by his grandson, Raegan; brothers, Lawrence "Lunch", Charles "Chuckie" and Freddy;godchild, Donald Bernard, We’koqma’q.
Visitation after 4 p.m. Sunday in the Multi-Purpose Building, 160 Reservation Road, We’koqma’q First Nation. Burial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Blessed Kateri Parish Cemetery, Salite to follow. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
