CHARLTON, William (Bill) Walton- age 84. Solemn strikes the funeral chime to note Bill’s departing on Saturday, June 3, 2017, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Bill took his final farewell. The eldest son of the late William and Margaret (McMurray) Charlton of Dundee Scotland. Born November 3, 1932, in Dundee Scotland. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Glenda (nee Cardwell); beloved daughters, Gail (Roger) McMullan, London, England; Elaine, Halifax; brother, Francis (Jenn) Charlton, brother-in-law, Charles Reed; sisters-in-law, Maureen Charlton, Jennifer Charlton, all of Scotland; Veronica Cambridge, England; many nieces and nephews extending over three generations. He was predeceased by his son, Paul Murray Charlton; sisters, Theresa, Edith, Monica; sister-in-law, Margaret; brothers, Garnet, Patrick; brothers-in-law, Bill Craig and John Cambridge. Bill was educated in Dundee Scotland, apprenticed engineer at Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering , Dundee. He attended Dundee Technical College and Southampton University Engineering School. Completed National Service in British Merchant Navy, then served with British Petroleum Co., on Tankers. Service Engineer with Ronald Trist Co, then Thermal Operator for North of Scotland Hydro. Bill emigrated to Canada fifty years ago, briefly to PEI. Serving with Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker Vessels as senior engineer on CCGS Cornwallis and CCGS Wolfe. Bill joined NS Power Commission at Trenton Generating Station 1968, transferring to Point Tupper Generating Station 1969 to 1993 as Shift Supervisor then Training and Safety Officer. He retired due to neuromuscular illness, then Parkinson’s Disease. Bill worked on behalf of many charities, and his local community. In his younger years working with the poor and aged society, as member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. In 1963 he became a member of Caledonian #254 Masonic Lodge Dundee, Scotland, later becoming a member and Past Master of Lodge Solomon, #46 Port Hawkesbury. He was elected District Depute Grand Master for Cape Breton South. In 2013 his efforts as a 50 year mason was recognised by #254 Masonic Lodge Dundee Scotland and #46 Masonic Lodge Port Hawkesbury. Bill was a 32nd Scottish Rite mason and a Shriner of Philae Temple, Halifax. Also #46 Mason Lodge scholarship committee member. Bill became a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Trois Riviere, Quebec while serving in the Canadian Coast Guards; his membership was transferred to RCL Branch 43 Port Hawkesbury. He served in several offices and was elected Branch President in 1976 and again in 2012. When Vice-President and President he lead the committee that built the new Cenotaph in Port Hawkesbury in 1977. Moving under his direction, the war memorials from the old main street to the new Cenotaph site on Reeves Street opposite the Legion branch. He was branch Chaplain for over twenty five years, ordered and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. He had great joy entertaining at the seniors Christmas dinners. During his Presidency he organized the first New Year Levees in Port Hawkesbury which continue today. Bill was well known for his extensive knowledge, reasoning ability and often called upon to help others with their problems. He had many interests, History, Religion, Medicine, Music, Art, Astronomy, Golf, but his favourite subject was Robert Burns. As a member of Dundee Burns Club he could exalt the Bard to anyone who would listen. He started in his own home, the Tipperton Burns Club having annual dinners for five years before moving them for another five years to the RCL Branch 43, thus introducing many others to Haggis. His love of music flourished as a member of St. Marks United Church and St. Joseph’s Parish choirs both in Port Hawkesbury. Local commitments involved Cape Breton South Liaison Officer for HRH Duke of Edinburgh Conference: Member of Toastmasters, Under the Map theatre group, the local Gaelic group, the Curling Club, Antigonish and Dundee Golf Clubs, he twice won the Yacht club chowder competition and was Chairman for Port Hawkesbury Housing Committee. The family and many friends will mourn the sudden loss of such a well-liked man. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. from St. Marks United Church, Port Hawkesbury on Thursday, June 15, 2017, with Nan Corrigan DM officiating. Family flower only, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Port Hawkesbury.
