Obituary
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sullivan, John William - age 91 years of Manchester. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of husband, father and grandfather, John William on Friday, June 9, 2017 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. He was born in Glace Bay, June 26, 1925, to the late Fred and Myra (Keeping) Sullivan. At the age of 4, they moved to Port Shoreham, Guysborough County. He moved to Ontario where he met and married his wife, Marjorie Jean Toze, on September 25, 1954. They moved to NS in 1963, to raise their family of 8 children on the family farm, where all children learned a strong work ethic. John was proud of his children. He instilled the value of education and encouraged all his children to get a post-secondary education. This value of an education has been extended to his 15 grandchildren. Working as a team each child managed to complete multiple degrees/certificates debt free. He would tell anyone who would listen, what his children or grandchildren were doing. John's recreation was to work, and to list all his employment would fill a book. John was a farmer at heart and with the help of his family built the farm from forest that covered his land. To help pay for these improvements John took many off farm jobs including pulp cutter and hauler, loading of boats in Mulgrave, and highway road foreman to name a few.
John retired from the DOT in 1991 to work alongside Fred and Marjorie on the family farm. Although he loved all his grandchildren equally, he had a special connection with Melissa as she got off the bus from school and went running to be Grampy’s barn helper. John was predeceased by his parents Fred and Myra, and daughter, Barbara Jean in infancy. John is survived by wife of 62+ years, Marjorie, children: Frederick, Douglas, Alice, Robert, Susan, Eric, Brian, Myra, and his son, Eddie Meagher plus 15 grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A private family internment will take place on Saturday, June 24th, with a celebration of John's life to take place in the Boylston Community Centre from 2-4 p.m. with all welcome to drop in. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manchester/Port Shoreham Cemetery Improvement Fund, c/o Grant Hayden.
