McNAMARA, Joseph David "Joe"- Age 88, Evanston, Richmond Co., passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late Gordon James and Annie Melinda (Cogswell) McNamara. Joe worked on the railroad in the extra gang, laying rail throughout the Maritimes. After that he went to work for AECL at the Point Tupper Heavy Water Plant as a guard with Pinkerton. After the plant closure he went to work for Central Trust looking after the homes of employees of the Heavy Water Plant. He then went on to work as a Stevedore for Stora Paper Mill. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially snaring rabbits and fishing eels. He was talented as a fiddle player and guitarist. He enjoyed all the visits he got from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He called them "Poppy’s" little boys and girls. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Shirley (O’Brien) McNamara; children, David (Louise) McNamara, Truro; Cheryl (Darrell) Chiavari, Port Hawkesbury; Karen MacEachern, Port Hawkesbury; Darryl (Holly) McNamara, Liverpool; Stephen (Celeste) McNamara, Samson’s Cove; Stewart (Yolanda DeGruchy) McNamara, Linwood; Shane (Pam) McNamara, Belnan; Kent (Tracy Harris) McNamara, The Points, West Bay; Kyle (Jessie) McNamara, Creignish Rear; Kyla (Brian) Nelligan, Bowmanville, Ont; Rosalie Kennedy, at home; 23 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carmie MacLeod; Muriel Wilkie; sisters-in-law, Pat McNamara and Anne McNamara. He was predeceased by brothers, Valentine McNamara; Vincent McNamara; sister, Blanche Wareham; brothers-in-law, Gus Wareham and John Dan MacLeod; daughter-in-law, Susan Pearl McNamara. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, Lower River Inhabitants with Father Joe MacKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Parish Cemetery, Whiteside. Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Hospital Foundation.
