We are sad to announce the passing of Nancy Anna Catherine (MacDermid) Langley, age 90 years of Baddeck on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Nancy was born in Baddeck on September 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Murdock and Catherine (MacRae) MacDermid. Nancy’s early education was at the Old Baddeck Academy with her final grade XII year at the Bridgewater High School. After graduating from Dalhousie University, she taught school at Bridgewater and Baddeck. She was the last principal of the Old Baddeck Academy. Due to her father’s failing health she decided to leave teaching and manage the family business, ‘The White Store’ – a very popular store for locals and tourists. Active in the life of her community, Nancy served on the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees during the planning of construction phase of the new hospital. She was a member of Baddeck Bay Hospital Auxiliary and the Victoria County Hospice Society. Other interests included Baddeck Home & School Association, recognition of the Old Baddeck Academy property and in having Baddeck designated for its role in the establishment of the National Home and School Association, The 100th Anniversary celebration of the Flight of the Silver Dart and its return to Baddeck. Nancy was an active Life Member of the Alexander Graham Bell Club, as well as Life Member of the Baddeck Public Library Society. Both organizations she enjoyed and attended up until her sickness curtailed her activity. With a life long interest in politics, she encouraged women in politics through the Victoria County Liberals Ladies Club and the Nova Scotia Liberal Women’s Commission. Working with many others she was a driving force in bringing the community together to save and restore the Old Post Office and Customs Building. Nancy was recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2012. A faithful member of Knox Presbyterian church, a valuable choir member, Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Managers for many years and was a life member of the Atlantic Mission Society. Nancy is survived by her two sisters, Florence Lang and Marjorie MacKenzie; two nieces, Margo (Ian) Buchanan and Sylvia (John) Pearo; grand-niece Jennie (Willie) Harvey and grand-nephew Eric Nicholson; special cousin Barbara Rudolph; step-son Brian (Margaret) Langley; step-daughter Leckie Langley, and step-son Larry (Joan) Langley; step-grandchildren Susan (David) Vanier, Brett (Heather) Langley, David Langley, Jean (Brian) Little, Sarah Langley, Annie (Matt) King; step-great-grandchildren Louis Vanier, Lilly and Lucy Langley. Nancy was predeceased by her loving husband Ellis B. Langley and her parents Murdock and Catherine MacDermid. Special thanks to Dr. Genge, Dr. Ritter, Cathy MacMillan, Lisa Burke-Edwards, Marilyn McKenna and Zelda Goad for their professional care during her sickness. A special Thank You to her caregivers Linda Murphy, Grace Ann MacDermid, Gloria MacAskill and Donna Ross who made Nancy’s wish to remain home possible. Family flowers only please and donations in memory of Nancy may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Knox Presbyterian Church, Grant Street, Baddeck from 3-8 pm and funeral service at Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 2pm with reception to follow in the church hall. Funeral service officiated by Rev. Brian MacLeod. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
