Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MacDONALD, George Henry – Age 74 years of Port Hawkesbury. Passed away peacefully in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 with his wife and loved ones by his side. George was born in Glace Bay, on September 3, 1943, the son of the late George and Marion (MacKenzie) MacDonald.
While stationed at CFB Greenwood, George met the love of his life, Miriam, who he said he "would marry again in a heartbeat". George was a proud member of the Air Force branch of the CAF for 30 years and spent his career in CFB Greenwood, CFB Trenton, and CFB Comox. Following his retirement from the Military with the rank of MWO, he worked for IMP at the Stanfield International Airport for ten years. George took great pleasure in his hobbies of gardening and woodworking, but his greatest joys were his children and grandchildren – and his cats, of which there were many over the years.
George is survived by his loving wife, Miriam (Grant), children, Robert (Christine) of Nepean, ON; Margie (Tim) MacMillan of Port Hawkesbury; and George (Julie) of St. John’s, NL; as well as grandchildren, Teagan and Tyson MacDonald; Kai and Kameron MacMillan; Rhea, Grayson and Addison MacDonald. He is also survived by his siblings, Margie (Kevin Hill), Edward (Anita), Francis, and Ollie Hamilton, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, Paul (Anne) and sisters, Mary Catherine and Mary Louise, in infancy.
The family would like to express our sincere appreciation for the compassionate care given to George by Drs. Hanspal, Pluta and Collins; the Palliative Care Team of Dr. Phillip Cooper and Nancy Cameron, and the Nursing Staff of Strait Richmond Hospital.
Visitation will be held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury on Sunday, March 18th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The evening visitation will begin with a Vigil Service of prayer and celebration. The Funeral Mass will be held in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 138 Granville St, Port Hawkesbury, on Monday, March 19th at 2 p.m. with Fr. Allan MacMillan, cousin of George, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated and may be made in George’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Society, or Port Hawkesbury Baptist Church. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
