McALOON, Kevin Gerard – 1954 – 2018. With a broken heart I regret to inform you of the passing of my husband, Kevin. Born in Canso, on January 2, 1954, he was the eldest son of the late Arthur and Thelma (Nickerson) McAloon. Left to mourn are his wife, Deborah Avery; his uncle and best friend since birth, Winfred Nickerson and his wife Deanna. He also leaves behind five sisters, Cheryl, Susan, Maureen, Mary and Sharon; three brothers, Terry, Shawn and Brian, along with their children all in various parts of Florida. He will be forever missed by his entire "Avery" family and his many friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Howard and Thelma Avery. When Kevin was 17 years of age, he joined the American Army with the Broken Heart Battalion. He served in Vietnam, South East Asia and Korea on the demilitarized zone. He came in contact with the deadly Agent Orange while serving. Throughout the years and many surgeries he was finally diagnosed with Agent Orange Poisoning, which in turn caused his fatal brain cancer. But he soldiered on as only he knew how to do. After his service days, he became a Millwright, excelling at his job until a mining accident put a stop to that. But he always found something interesting to do, a jack of all trades. He was a good, honest man to all. I want to thank all people who helped in ways both big and small. It was appreciated so much. To John (his cousin) and wife Mora, your continuous visits with Kevin brightened his day. He loved you both more than you know. To all staff in Palliative Care at St. Martha’s Hospital, to Continuous Care Workers in Canso, Thelma and Bessie (you always made him laugh). Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To Dr. Brian Steeves, who was both doctor and friend, a huge "thank you". Per Kevin’s wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes brought home. There will be no visitation or funeral, A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 46, Canso. All are welcomed to come say farewell.
