Please share a memory of Josephine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Josephine Dorothy (Josie) MacLachlan. Josie was born June 17, 1921 in Big Brook, Inverness County, Cape Breton. She was the daughter of the late Louis Archibald and Flora Mary (MacKinnon) Murray. Besides her parents she was predeceased by husband, Peter Alexander MacLachlan (Oct 18,1917-May 17,1974) brother, Sgt. John James Murray (Apr. 22,1916-Apr. 5,1945, killed in battle), Sister Dolena Margaret Murray (Jan. 24,1918-Mar.18, 2014) Brother Abraham Peter Murray (Apr. 12,1919 - Feb. 21,2017) She is survived by son, James (Darlene), Smith Falls, Ontario; daughter, Florence, Truro; son, Archie (Paula), Port Hawkesbury. Also survived by grandchildren, Aaron, Josie, Brianna (Matthew) Tremblay, and Lauren. Josie growing up in rural Cape Breton in the early twenties had a strong connection to farm, family, God and hard times which got her through her 97 years with grace and dignity. Before her marriage she worked at the Riverdale Co-op West Bay Road, after the passing of her husband she returned to retail and managed the River Denys Co-op until her retirement 32 years ago. Josie’s Civic duties included three terms on Inverness County Council (undefeated) where she served on the Strait Regional School Board along with The Inverness Historical Society and other committees. Her grandchildren gave her tremendous joy and often said to them. "God bless you and guide you every step of your way." Josie was a person of incredible faith and felt privileged to serve her church in many ways. Josie’s house was always open to family friends and neighbours for a cup of tea and molasses cookies. The family would like to thank the staff at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Dr. Collins and Palliative care during her short stay with them. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. As per Josie’s wishes there will be no visitation but a fellowship after the funeral at the West Bay Road Fire Hall. Funeral Service from Princeville United Church (1041 Riverside Road) 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16 with Rev. Donna Lovelace officiating. Interment to follow in the Princeville Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to West Bay Road Fire Department, Princeville United Church or a charity of your choice.
