MacKINNON, William "Billy" - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William "Billy" MacKinnon, age 79, of East Lake Ainslie. Billy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, with his wife and family by his side. Born in Hays River, Inverness County on March 15, 1939, Billy was the youngest son of the late Allan and Flora (Matheson) MacKinnon. He was a member of Stewart United Church and could be found in the back row of the choir almost every Sunday. Billy was a member of Sircom Lodge 66, Keltic Star Chapter #19 OES and the Whycocomagh Volunteer Fire Department. Volunteering his time to his community which was very important to him. He served on the boards of ENRICH, L’Arche Cape Breton and the Whycocomagh Co-op. Billy spent his early years working on the family farm in Hays River and in the woods cutting pulp. He retired from Stora Forest Industries in 1994. He loved being in the woods and in his garden. For 45 years, he and Anna worked together as mail carriers on the Lake Ainslie mail route. He looked forward to seeing (and teasing) his friends along the way and at the Whycocomagh Post Office. Billy is survived by Anna, his loving and devoted wife of 58 years and their daughters, Florence MacKinnon (David Ferguson), Moncton; Wilma (Murdo) Ferguson, Port Hawkesbury; Joy (Steve) Garland, Hammonds Plains; grandchildren, Erin (Mike) Stoll, Drew and Cassie Ferguson, Kyle and Sarah Garland. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes MacPhail, East Walpole, MA; and sister-in-law, Mae (Nelson) Poole, Whycocomagh; special cousin, Don (Carol) MacKinnon, New Market, ON; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Angus Neil and Donald; parents-in-law, William and Cassie MacIntosh; brothers-in-law, Leroy MacPhail, Roy MacKenzie, Gussie MacIntosh and sister-in-law, Marguerite MacKenzie. The family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to Dr. Genge, Dr. Ritter and the Palliative Care team, the nurses and staff at Baddeck Hospital and the Home Care team who took such exceptional care of Billy. He faced his battle with cancer with courage and faith while still managing to keep his sense of humour. Visitation will be in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh on Thursday, November 15th from 2:00 to 8:30 p.m. Masonic service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service from Stewart United Church on Friday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow in Stewartdale Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Victoria County Palliative Care, Stewart United Church or the charity of your choice.
