MARKEY (Kavanagh), Alice Marie – Age 88 of Canso, Guysborough Co. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alice Marie Markey on Sunday, December 16, 2018 IN St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish, surrounded by her family. Born in Canso on January 17, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Beatrice (Kelly) Kavanagh. She was predeceased by her husband Aaron Markey; brothers Bill, Edward, Cecil, Ken and Jim; sisters Margaret, Catherine and Irene; and by her niece Juanita Gurney. She is survived by nieces, Irene MacDonald (Finlay) and Donna (Tom) Nowe; nephews Don (Darlene) MacDonald, Kevin (Marci) MacDonald, and Jim Kavanagh Jr.; grandnephews Allan MacDonald and Connor Kavanagh, and grandnieces Emma MacDonald, Sarah MacDonald, and Hope Kavanagh. She worked at the Canso Post Office, and in the hospitality industry in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. In her later years, she didn’t get out often, but she kept in touch will all, and loved visits from family and friends. She enjoyed watching hockey, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a treat to have one of her boiled dinners or melt-in-your mouth shortbread cookies. The dogs of Water Street also knew what door to scratch for a treat. It was important to Alice to remain in her family home which was made possible through the special care of homeworkers, supportive neighbours and Irene and Fin – sincere thanks to all. There may be one less house light on Water Street but a new light shines from above keeping an eye on all. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 121 School Street, Canso. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 20, from Star of the Sea Parish, Canso with Father Jonathan Nnajiofor officiating. Burial to follow in the Star of the Sea Parish cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the Royal Canadian Legion in Canso. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Alice to Star of the Sea Parish in Canso.
